CHAPTER 11

“What have you found out?” Brigid asked after she answered a call from Sheriff Davis. She’d been doing housework and welcomed the distraction.

“Not much I’m afraid,” he sighed into the phone. “Whoever did it was purty meticulous. The pictures were printed from home and there weren’t no fingerprints to tell us who it was. We’re still goin’ over some prints found at his house, but since they were mixed in with a few others, don’t expect to get much from them.”

“Well, it was worth a shot,” she said glumly. “I tried to convince Mike to relocate, but he seemed pretty determined to stay put.”

“Yeah,” he sighed. “Well, at least we know it weren’t just his imagination. Think we can safely say that it’s not all in his head. Looks like someone is messin’ with him. I need to look at the roster and see which deputy of mine might be available to watch him.

“I’m thinkin’ the best plan at this point in time, since he won’t relocate, is to let him stay put and watch him. See if we can get eyes on whoever is botherin’ him. I don’t think they’re gonna’ stop with the pictures.”

“I don’t think so either,” Brigid said, shaking her head. She was walking through the empty house, collecting dirty clothes to throw in the laundry. “Seems to me that it’s escalating.”

“Yep,” Sheriff Davis agreed. “Let’s hope their next move will be enough fer us to find out who’s doin’ it and get this taken care of fairly quickly. Never a good thing when people are sendin’ messages like them photos. They want Mike to know they’re watchin’ him.”

“I agree,” she said as she tossed an armload of clothes in the washer. “And if they were trying to spook him to get him to leave and he doesn’t…” She let her sentence hang in the air.

“They’re gonna’ find more creative ways to get their point across,” Sheriff Davis finished. “Go talk to Mike and let him know I’m gonna’ be puttin’ someone on him. Might take me forty-five minutes or so to send someone out, but I’m on it. If ya’ could stay with him until I let ya’ know there’s someone posted outside of his house, I’d appreciate it. Make sure ya’ got your weapon on ya’, just in case.”

“Will do,” she said as she started the washer. “I’m leaving now.” She ended the call with the sheriff and pulled on the holster Linc had gotten her for her gun. Since it was cooler out today, she could wear it under her jacket, and no one would be any the wiser. She got her jacket and purse, and in minutes was out the door.

It didn’t take long to get across town and pull up in front of Mike’s quaint little house. She was sure he’d be relieved to know he was going to have someone guarding him at a distance. Again, Brigid thought he was crazy for staying by himself at home. She wasn’t sure she’d be able to do the same if she was in his situation.
